Lazy Saturday's

Back in the day...

I remember when living in Ft. Lauderdale as a kid, the treat for Saturday was to get in the family car with mom and head to Publix for the weekly grocery shopping. You can smell the bakery and the lunch meats as soon as you enter the front door. You can just tell that something wonderful and tasty will be in the basket to make it's way back home for your siblings to share.

One of my most favorites was while shopping, it always seemed to have taken place around lunch time. I would stand next to mom as she was ordering lunch meat, she would pick up those special treats for dad, but then she would purchase for me (not only me, but I thought it was) beef bologna. Love it!! with some good cheese between two slices of bakery bread. YUM!! On the way home from the store, we were allowed to get into the lunch meat and cheese and make a sandwich. Although, if you could hang in there and hold out until about 3:00 pm, the Charles Chip truck would make its way down the street and mom and dad would buy some potato chips to go with the sandwich. Life was great.

I haven't been to Publix with mom in years, she is now basking in wonderful Amish shopped stores in PA where you can purchase Lebanon bologna for much cheaper that you can drive to Publix. However, when I arrive, I am always treated to some great tastes at mom's. Front porch sitting with a great nibble on a plate and much laughter is more than anyone can handle, but I give the old family try.

I love Saturday's, it is my favorite day of the week and I am sure today will be enjoyable. We are going to see a movie at 4:00 "Swing Vote", I loved Man of the Year and this to could be one for the list. I will have something to eat while watching the movie but afterwards we are going to Shorty's BBQ and have dinner with friends. BBQ and friendship, both are just a "southern thing". One of the items on the menu at Shorty's is corn on the cob, not just any corn on the cob, they cook it in milk and then bring it to your table in a bath of melted butter with skewers at each end so that you can continuously roll the corn in the butter. Doesn't that just sound good?

Yes, I love saturdays, during Autumn Leaf, saturday is the day that you can sit back and talk about all that you did and bought at the festival. Talks of Poor Man's Apple, Carmel Corn and other fine fall treats and conversations for the front porch, unless we are strolling around KMart with a bog of popcorn and an icee.

Ok, Saturday is also a day of laundry, bill paying and grocery shopping. I am off to finish my chores so that I can make the 4:00pm movie.
